Are American colleges like in the movies?

When I finish school I have decided that I want to travel to America and go to college over there. In the movies they look like so much fun! I was just wondering if they actually like that and if so which ones? Are American colleges like in the movies?Like the previous two responders have noted, different American colleges have different "cultures". A few are "party schools" but many others expect serious academic work with occasional opportunities to "blow off steam" within limits. Like most of life, the trick is to balance the hard work with a little fun.

Most of all, stay away from drugs and drink alcohol in moderation. Be aware of the legal drinking age where ever you go to school, it may range from 18 to 21 years. Actually, you may find that many American students are less mature for their age than those from other countries.

Depending on where you are from, American professors expect students to do more independent critical thinking in their essays than many Europeans and Asians are used to. Whatever opinion you state in your paper, be able to defend it with logic, reason and, if possible, with supporting data.

Finally, American universities have many international students on campus. There is usually a club for international students and faculty members who are available to help them adjust to our culture and habits. The schools may be very different in atmosphere depending on where they are located and whether they are public or private. I went to a large university in Texas and it was quite common to see horse trailers in the student parking lots and more cowboy hats than you've ever seen in any Western movie.

Oh, and one other thing. American football is elevated to the status of a religion on most campuses. Its one the fun parts of campus life.

Welcome to America when you get here and have fun but not so much fun that you don't get a good education, too.Are American colleges like in the movies? No,not realy, but the really fun ones you're thinking of are probably the big public universities in the Midwest. I go to NYU, urban schools are nothing like that. You don't really have football games, frat parties, campus in the city, though you do get more world class culture. Are American colleges like in the movies? Some schools are more fun than others. Which movies are you referring to? Some, such as Animal House, are caricatures of college life rather than accurate depictions.
