Is it just me, or are more Brits using American usage than former British usage? I've recently seen on TV (BBCAmerica) British actors using formations like "the government is", as opposed to what was used formerly - "the government are".
I recently read of a girl in Britain who watched so much American TV, that when she witnessed an accident she couldn't understand why she couldn't reach the Police when she dialed "9-1-1". I got a laugh out of that.UK: Is American television and movies influencing every-day English usage?my half sisters, mums friend kid is 4. and she lives in England and have devolped a Americans accent. she has never been to the US in her lifeUK: Is American television and movies influencing every-day English usage?yes some English kids get American accents when they watch too much TV
scaryUK: Is American television and movies influencing every-day English usage?T.V. and Film has always influenced culture and always will, and since like 70% of English speaking T.V. and Film come from the US, it makes sense that we Brit's are starting to act all American. Language evolves all the time, it only natural, but I always make sure that I use British spelling, I don't even use that terrible Americanisation "text speak". And in regards to the 911 thing, apparently it's such a common occurrence that mobile provider's or the government (or someone cause it does) made so 911 diverts you to 999 (although 999 is easier to remember than 911).
Also a lot of British people my generation (I'm 21) know more about American politics then British politics, for example everyone I ask knows that Joe Biden is the Vice President, but some people honestly didn't know that Nick Clegg is our Deputy Prime Minister, or that since we elect parties not people that the position of Deputy Prime Minister is a position given only to people you want to keep happy but not powerful (In the UK the Dep PM doesn't take over if the PM leaves in office or dies in office, the new PM is chosen by a in party vote until the next election. Sorry way of topic, just that the Americanisation of Britain, and British people not knowing their extremely rich and varied culture, really really REALLY annoys me.
