Vanilla Sky (or the Spanish flick it remade, "Open Your Eyes", which was actually better)



Shawshank Redemption (my all-time favorite movie, wonderful themes of hope, spiritual redemption and belief in oneself in face of adversity)



Magnolia (not quite the same themes of self-awareness/rebirth, but deep nonetheless)



Field of Dreams (a bit on the sappy side, but there's a mystical quality to it, the Burt Lancaster "Moonlight Graham" scene always moves me to tears)



The Matrix (if you can get past the gratuitous violence and Keanu Reeves' generally bad acting, the Gnostic self-knowledge theme is quite deep, along with some of the symbolism, e.g., Reeves' character Thomas Anderson is a representation of a "doubting Thomas" self-doubting character and Anderson translates as "son of man", "matrix" translates from Latin as "womb", symbolizes spiritual awakening/rebirth)



Btw, if you haven't checked out the HBO series "Six Feet Under" you DEFINITELY should. It was written by Alan Ball, who wrote American Beauty, and man oh man is it good. Alas! Someone in here likes "American Beauty"!!! It's number nine on my All-time Favorite Movie list. Actually, it should be somewhere on the top my list because "sometimes there's so much beauty in the world I feel like I can't take it, like my heart's going to cave in."
