In American - Do Cars require an MOT (or equivalent) to make sure there safe?

Just watching some american movies, you see cars that would be crushed so fast in the UK!

But in american on shows like Pimp My Ride, you see cars that are beyond anything allowed on the road in the UK.

Does america have a vehicle standard? In American - Do Cars require an MOT (or equivalent) to make sure there safe? The USA and Canada have very stringent laws that dictate what is a safe or unsafe vehicle.

In Canada these laws are fairly rigidly enforced at time of licensing but we do not have the number of enforcement people on the roads required to constantly check vehicles. That costs money that the Government would prefer to pyysse away on it's rich friends.

It's pretty much the same situation in the USA. Not enough enforcement personnel.

Having driven in both countries I would place Canada's enforcement just marginally above that of the USA. But both countries have vehicles on the road that definitely should be scrapped. In American - Do Cars require an MOT (or equivalent) to make sure there safe?We have 50 States and the DC, all of which have different law. Few have year or two once look to see it they are roadworthy, not not many. I'm in California and they are very lenient. We have an old '72 Camaro with about 180,000 hard miles. Have a leak in the third gear switch so we only use first and second, the center link is worn, side marker lights missing (not a law requirement) , windows do not go all the way up, doors need to be lifted to closed, missing front bumper, needs tires, etc.. But it is legal, and safe. Any vehicle is safe if the driver compensates.

Really, very few accidents are caused by mechanical problems -- hardly any! Your "MOT" is more a revenue thing, not safety. In American - Do Cars require an MOT (or equivalent) to make sure there safe? Some states have annual inspections, some do not. The cars in the movies have nothing to do with real life, they all have the rear view mirrors removed to make it easier to film through the windshield for example. In American - Do Cars require an MOT (or equivalent) to make sure there safe?
In some places you must get an annual inspection and in some states/ provinces the car is only inspected when it is sold to another buyer.

So to answer your question it all depends on which state or province that you reside.
