Mostly, it is used to describe students who are in their first year of highschool or college. Students who are in the 9th grade or are in their first year of college are freshman.

A freshman is someone who is in their first year of upper/high school and/or college.



Someone in the secon year is a Sophomore, the third year is junior, and the fourth year is Senior.



This only applies if the school is a four year school. If it is only a three year school (many high schools are only three years still) then there is no freshman class.
it applies to 1st year students. may it be high school or college, if you are in 1st year, you are a freshmen.



2nd year - sophomore

3rd year - junior

4th year - senior.
first year college: freshman

second year: sophomore

third year: junior

fourth year: senior

after that: graduate student



also used in 4-year high schools as the 9th grade out of 12 grade levels (before high school graduation)
9th grade - in my town this was officially high school (9-12th grade)

grade 9 - freshman

grade 10 - sophmore

grade 11 - junior

grade 12 - senior



just in case you hear these ones too. It also applies for 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th years of college respectively.

If you attend college beyond 4 years than you are an eternal senior until you do graduate (ask me how I know....sigh)
